What this Shopify image checker tests
Shopify does not reject images for style reasons as marketplaces do, so this checker focuses on its upload limits and on what keeps a store looking consistent:
| Check | Shopify guidance | How it is measured |
|---|---|---|
| Image size | 2048 × 2048 px recommended for square images | The file’s real pixel size |
| Upload limit | Up to 5000 × 5000 px, or 25 megapixels | The file’s real pixel size |
| File size | Under 20 MB | The file’s size |
| File format | PNG and JPEG, plus TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC and WebP | The file type |
| Aspect ratio | Use the same ratio for all main images | Width compared with height |
| Background | Not required to be white | Shown as a note |
Check more than one image
Consistency matters more on Shopify than any single image. Run a few of your main images through the checker and compare the ratio and frame fill. If they differ, products will look uneven on collection pages.
See the Shopify product image size guide, and fixes for blurry or uneven images.
Common questions
What is the best image size for Shopify?
Shopify says 2048 × 2048 pixels usually displays best for square product images.
Is this an official Shopify tool?
No. It is an independent checker based on Shopify’s Help Center guidance.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The image is read and measured in your browser and is never sent to our servers. We only count anonymous results, such as which checks passed.
